Statutory Sick Pay for Employees

NI Contribution Credits

You will not have to pay NI contributions on your SSP if the amount you are getting is less than the level at which NI contributions are paid. You may get NI contributions credited if you need them to qualify for benefits. You cannot get credits if you are paying reduced rate NI contributions as a married woman or widow.

NI credits can help you to qualify for some state benefits, including Retirement Pension (RP). There are two things you must do to safeguard your future benefit rights:

  1. If you move, write to your nearest Inland Revenue office giving them your name, NI number and new address.
  2. If you get SSP, make a note of when you were sick, in case you need to apply to the Inland Revenue office for credits. Credits will be awarded to maintain your NI record.
