How to Reduce Fuel Consumption in your Fleet

Improving your fleet's fuel performance makes sound commercial sense. Typically fuel costs will account for 20-30% of the total operating costs of your fleet. However, the good news is that fuel costs are not fixed overheads and they will vary according to factors such as vehicle type, driving style and mileage. By implementing effective fleet management most organisations can reduce fuel consumption by 10% or more.

Of course, reducing your fuel consumption is not just important for your bottom line, it's important for the environment too. And reducing the fuel used in your cars and vans will go a long way to reducing your company's contribution to pollution and emissions.

There are two main factors which contribute to the fuel efficiency of your fleet. These are your vehicles and your drivers. If you can maximise their efficiency, you'll do the same for your fleet's fuel efficiency.

Your drivers

• Fuel-efficient driving means lower bills, lower maintenance and lower insurance costs. Which means it pays to make your drivers aware of the ways to drive more efficiently. One way of doing this would be to send your drivers on an advanced driving course which teaches them how to drive more efficiently.
