Is there a directory of all the different types of designers, which I can use to select a designer for my project?

By contacting your local Business Link for design advice you can be put in touch with a suitable designer for your project, or your overall business needs. Discussing your project with a Business Link adviser will clarify these needs and help you with writing a design brief. This, in turn, will help you with your selection of the most appropriate designer.

Some organisations do have directories of designers. Take a look at the sites for the British Design Initiative and the Design Business Association, or visit the Design Council web site for all types of design information.
