How do I brief a designer?

A brief for a designer should be a comprehensive document.

It should contain all of the information a designer needs to fulfil the design objectives of your project.

A brief should include detail of the project in the following areas:

  • Your business objectives
  • The expected project outcomes
  • Background of your company, market and the project itself
  • Project specifics
  • Project management detail, responsibilities and time scales

For a detailed explanation of what a brief should contain, see our Briefing a Designer. Briefing a designer well will lead to a better result for your project.

Remember also that you can use design to improve your business through the products and services you offer, and you can double its effectiveness by planning for and using design strategically. By thinking the big design picture, rather than focussing on one single product, you can link all of the parts of your company that benefit from design and create a powerful business response that is irresistible to your customers.
