Enterprising BritainBusiness owners supporting regional enterprise to be recognised.

Entrepreneurs tackling the downturn through business projects that have transformed their local community have been called on to enter the Enterprising Britain awards.

The awards recognise the most enterprising locations across the UK – areas which have helped deal with the recession by creating jobs, supporting small firms and nurturing budding entrepreneurial talent.

Business owners can enter on behalf of their region and in so doing draw national attention to the work they have done in their area to stimulate enterprise. The winning region will receive an extensive media relations support package, and an accredited logo for merchandising and publicity materials.

“In a downturn, it is more important than ever that entrepreneurs are supported and have the confidence they need to develop their ideas,” said Secretary of State for Business, Lord Mandelson. “Enterprising Britain allows communities to share their experiences of innovation, inspire others and drive forward enterprise.”

Last year’s winner was Scarborough, where seasonal unemployment has been stamped out, new industry sectors created and more than £200 million of private sector investment attracted.

The competition is organised by the Make Your Mark campaign, on behalf of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR). The deadline for entries is 30 April.
